Get over yourself, I hear myself saying this over and over again. I say it about others and to others (in a joking manner of course),but I also say it to myself quietly. It never really hit me how powerful those three words really are, until I was reading through the book Crazy Love. I was recently talking to a friend and I specifically remember saying, “I wish they would just get over themselves”. Now that I think back on that night, all I can think is, who am I trying to kid, I need to get over myself. I wonder how many times in a day I say the word “I”, I have already said it 15 times in this small paragraph. What if I took that word and replaced it with the word “others”? Would this change everything about how I am are seen? Life is too short to constantly be worrying about “me” or “I”. If you truly have the love of Jesus in your heart, how can you not share it? We as Christians are called to serve God, and the biggest way we are called to serve is just to tell others about Him. Think about how you heard about Jesus, maybe you were raised in church or maybe you heard through a friend. Just imagine for a second that you had never heard or encountered that person. You would not be where you are today. What if you are supposed to be the person who tells that friend or random person on the street about Jesus. Would you just ignore the feeling, would you just tuck it behind and say “I’ll come back to that later” or “I’ll do it some other time”? I have found myself saying those 2 phrases many times before and I’m here to tell you, it’s just not working for me. Have you heard yourself say those exact same things time and time again? I have a solution for all of us in this same situation: GET OVER YOURSELF!!! We have a God who loves us unconditionally. Do you really think He would give us a task and not be there to support us in it 100%? Psalms 37:28 very clearly lays this out for us, “For the Lord loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones…” If we serve God and quit worrying about “me” and “I” maybe, just maybe, there would be a difference in this world. I don’t know if it is just me, but doesn’t it make you worry when you are walking down the street, in a store, or in a group of friends and you have no idea if the people you are surrounded by are Christians. This scares me to death. I think it is time to take a stand for what we know is the Truth. We all need to get over ourselves and do what we are called to do. The God who gives us life, who gives us air to breathe, who has supplied us with more than we could ever think, ask, or know that we have, asks us to do this one thing: Tell others about Him. In the book Crazy Love, Francis Chan talks about how each of us are so tiny. Each of us will get a short time to show God what we did to serve Him. Chan says “We have only our two-fifths-of-a-second-long scene to live. I don’t know about you, but I want my two-fifths of a second to be about my making much of God.” Reflect on what that says for a minute. In the book of James the Bible tells us, “Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” So since we only have this short time here on earth, let’s get up go out and do God’s will. It is time that we all get over ourselves.
